Apple has told developers that any App Store app with dating features, or with a virtual companion that engages users in sexual or romantic content, will carry a minimum age rating of 18+. The notice went up on the Apple Developer news page on 2 November 2026, and 9to5Mac and MacRumors both covered it the same day.
For anyone who uses AI chat apps, the interesting part is the second half of Apple’s definition. An AI “girlfriend” or “boyfriend” app that never connects you to another human now sits in the same bracket as a dating service.
What Apple announced
The change lands in App Store Connect, the portal developers use to manage their apps. From 16 November 2026, the age rating questionnaire gains two new content descriptors, and developers must answer both whenever they submit an app update or edit their questionnaire. Every app on the store has to carry the new declarations by 12 January 2027.
| Item | What Apple says | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Shared Location descriptor | Sharing of real-world location with another person or group | Questionnaire from 16 Nov 2026 |
| Dating and Relationships descriptor | Features enabling dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion engaging a user in sexual or romantic content | Questionnaire from 16 Nov 2026 |
| Rating consequence (dating) | Minimum age rating of 18+ | Applies once declared |
| Rating consequence (location) | May not affect the minimum rating in some regions | Applies once declared |
| Brazil | A16 for Shared Location, A18 for Dating and Relationships (local regulation) | Same schedule |
| Deadline for all apps | Declarations complete in App Store Connect | 12 Jan 2027 |
Apple’s wording on Shared Location is vague: it says only that the descriptor may not change the minimum rating “in some regions”, and PPC Land notes that Apple doesn’t name them. Brazil is the one country Apple spells out. Apps that would qualify for a lower rating there, such as a location-sharing app built for parents and children, can request one from Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security, according to MacRumors.
How the new rule works in practice
The descriptor is self-declared. Developers answer the question, and Apple’s reference page says it “generates appropriate ratings” from those answers, as PPC Land reports. Nothing in the notice describes an automated check of whether a companion app has quietly added romantic roleplay.
The rule is also not limited to AI. The Dating and Relationships definition covers connections between real people as well, so Tinder-style services and chatbot companions land in one category. The Tech Times reading is that the policy explicitly extends the 18+ floor to companion apps even when they connect you to nobody else.
What a higher rating does for families is simple. Parents using Apple’s Screen Time controls can block downloads above a chosen rating, so an app moved to 18+ falls behind that filter. Tech Times says this now reaches a broad set of companion and dating apps that may previously have sat lower. For adults the rating changes nothing about what they can use.
Developers get a generous runway. Between 16 November and 12 January there are 57 days (Our calculation: 14 days left in November, plus 31 in December, plus 12 in January). Any app that ships an update in that window has to declare sooner than the deadline.
How it compares with the old system and Google Play
Apple’s current rating scale was reworked in 2025. The Apple Developer news archive says the updated system added 13+, 16+ and 18+ to the existing 4+ and 9+ tiers, and that ratings can vary by country. The new descriptors slot into that scale; they don’t replace it. As of 3 November 2026, PPC Land observed that Apple’s reference table didn’t yet list either new descriptor.
| Platform | Rule for dating apps | AI romantic companions named? | Enforcement detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| App Store before 16 Nov 2026 | No dedicated dating descriptor (per PPC Land, 3 Nov 2026) | No | Developer self-rating |
| App Store from 16 Nov 2026 | Minimum 18+ if Dating and Relationships is declared | Yes, as virtual companions with sexual or romantic content | Self-declared; all apps by 12 Jan 2027 |
| Google Play | Apps whose core function is dating or matchmaking must block minors via Play Console | Not named in the policy pages I read | Incidental dating features need age-gating safeguards |
Google’s Age-Restricted Content and Functionality policy requires apps whose core purpose is matchmaking or dating to use Play Console tools to block minors. Apps where dating is incidental are exempt from that, provided they put age-gating safeguards in front of those specific features. A separate Play Console help page adds that Google doesn’t mandate a particular age-gating technology and that easily bypassed gates may not count.
The structural difference is that Google’s rule is about access and Apple’s is about the rating label. Neither policy page I found mentions chatbot companions explicitly on the Google side, so an Android AI companion app with romantic roleplay is a grey area unless the developer classifies it as dating.
Why the label matters for AI companion apps
The old situation was messy. Deepsee, an analytics firm, pulled store data in mid-2026 on 4,346 AI character and companion apps across both stores. It found that 2,589 of them, 60%, carried a rating that classifies them as accessible to minors: Teen or lower on Google Play, 12+ or lower on the App Store.
The two stores also disagreed with each other. According to PPC Land’s write-up of the Deepsee data, 106 apps were rated as accessible to minors on Google Play while carrying 17+ on the App Store, and only four went the other way. That analysis predates Apple’s change, so it describes the old state of play, not the one starting 16 November.
If developers answer honestly, much of that gap closes on iPhone. The word “honestly” is carrying real weight, though. The iGeeksBlog summary points out that Apple names no penalty for developers who miss the January deadline, and the notice doesn’t say whether an 18+ rating requires any form of age verification, a gap flagged by FourWeekMBA.
Price and availability
There is nothing to buy. The new questionnaire fields reach developers on 16 November 2026 and the declarations are mandatory for every app by 12 January 2027. Users won’t need to update anything on their phones; the rating simply shows up on app pages and feeds into Screen Time filters.
The affected audience is large in kind if not in number: dating apps, AI companion apps, and anything that bolts a flirty chatbot persona onto another product. Apps that handle location sharing between family members face a lighter touch outside Brazil.

OpenAI will merge ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs
OpenAI emailed users on 2 November 2026 to say it will fold the Chat and Work tabs of the ChatGPT desktop app into one, TechCrunch reports. It starts with select users for feedback, with no date given for a wider rollout, and Codex stays a separate section of the app.
The catch for paying users is that ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance pool. OpenAI says most people won’t notice, but depending on usage and model, some will wait for resets more often.
Spotify’s AI remix add-on gets a reported price
The Financial Times reported on 30 October 2026, via The Next Web, that Spotify plans to launch its AI covers and remixes tool in early 2027. The add-on could cost an extra $4 to $5 a month on top of Premium (currency as reported, US dollars), and Spotify could unveil it around the Grammy Awards in February.
Only artists who opt in would be available, even where their label has signed a licensing deal. ShiftDelete notes that Spotify declined to comment and that the sources said neither price nor timing is final, so treat both as a rumour for now.
What this means for you
If you have kids with iPhones, check Screen Time’s content restrictions after 16 November and set the app rating limit below 18+. Apps that declare themselves honestly will drop out of reach; apps that don’t will still look like they did before, so it’s worth searching the App Store for companion apps your child already has.
If you use an AI companion app yourself, expect an 18+ label and possibly a prompt or an update from the developer before 12 January 2027. Nothing about the rule stops an adult from using these apps.
Android parents get less from this announcement. Google’s policy language centres on dating and matchmaking apps, so use Family Link’s rating limits and treat any chatbot with a romantic persona as unrated in practice until Google says otherwise.
And if you’re a developer with a chatbot that can turn flirtatious, declare it now rather than on 11 January. The rule applies at the next update anyway.
