Microsoft bundles 25 free Xbox games with new Windows 11 PCs

Microsoft has found a new way to make a Windows 11 PC purchase feel like a bigger deal than it is: free games. Starting in November, buying an eligible Windows 11 machine from a participating US retailer will unlock a digital bundle of 25 Xbox games, timed to Xbox’s 25th anniversary.

The Xbox brand approaches its official 25th anniversary on November 15, 2026, and Microsoft wants that milestone attached to new hardware sales rather than just nostalgia posts. Microsoft is celebrating with a digital collection of 25 games worth more than $500, and the offer was detailed in a Windows Experience Blog post.

What’s actually in the bundle

The offer starts November 2, 2026, for eligible Windows PCs purchased from participating US retailers. Buy the right machine in that window and you get a shot at claiming the full 25-game collection at no extra cost.

Microsoft hasn’t published the entire list yet, but it has named the headline acts. The collection includes The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, and Gears of War: Reloaded. That’s a reasonable spread of genres and three different decades of Xbox history in one bundle.

Claiming isn’t automatic. Eligible buyers must claim the bundle through the Microsoft Store on their device, and once claimed, the games are linked to the buyer’s Microsoft account. That account tie matters for anyone who upgrades hardware again later: once claimed, the PC versions are tied to the buyer’s Microsoft account and run on any compatible Windows PC, so the games follow the person, not the laptop.

There’s also a console angle. Select titles also work on Xbox Series X|S through Xbox Play Anywhere, though Microsoft says some games can’t be played on consoles. In other words, don’t assume every title in the 25-game haul will show up on your Series X library just because you claimed it on a laptop.

The fine print that matters

Three deadlines are worth writing down. The offer starts November 2, 2026, for eligible Windows PCs purchased from participating US retailers, the offer runs through December 31, 2026, while supplies last, and the claim deadline is February 12, 2027. Miss the purchase window or the claim window and the games are gone, no matter how good your receipt looks.

Hardware matters too. However, some eligible PCs cannot run every game, and not every title is playable on Xbox consoles. Claiming a bundle that includes, say, a modern Gears of War remaster doesn’t mean a budget Windows 11 laptop with integrated graphics will run it at anything playable. Microsoft is giving away licences, not performance.

The promotion also ships alongside a separate, related Windows 11 gaming feature. Advanced Shader Delivery, or ASD, delivers precompiled shaders for supported games, and Microsoft says this can reduce initial loading times, with titles such as Forza Horizon 6 and Gears of War: E-Day among the supported examples. To benefit, Microsoft recommends installing the Xbox PC app before downloading a supported game. It’s a smaller change than the game bundle, but it’s part of the same push to make Windows 11 feel more like a console out of the box.

How this compares with Xbox’s last big anniversary

Xbox has done this before, just not quite like this. For the 20th anniversary in 2021, Microsoft’s big swing was backward compatibility rather than new PC purchases: more than 70 Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games were added to the backward compatibility library on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, including franchises like Max Payne, F.E.A.R., and Skate. That update was free for anyone who already owned an Xbox console, no purchase required.

The rest of the 20th anniversary celebration leaned on merchandise and goodwill rather than game libraries: a free 20th Anniversary Avatar t-shirt and a new Xbox 360-inspired dynamic background, plus limited-edition hardware drops and surprise gift boxes sent to random fans. It was a nostalgia tour. The 25th anniversary bundle is closer to a sales incentive, because it only pays out if you buy new hardware from a specific list of US retailers in a two-month window.

That’s a smaller number of games this time around, but a much more direct financial hook: 25 games tied to a single hardware purchase is worth more to Microsoft’s PC sales numbers than 70 older titles unlocked for free on consoles people already own.

Who should actually care

This isn’t a reason on its own to buy a new PC. If you were already planning a Windows 11 upgrade this holiday and you buy from a participating US retailer in the right window, it’s a genuinely good bonus, potentially worth more than the price difference between two competing laptops. If you weren’t planning an upgrade, the fine print (US-only, specific retailers, hardware-dependent playability, a hard claim deadline) means it’s not worth bending your purchase timeline around.

Worth noting too: Microsoft hasn’t said anything about this extending outside the US, so anyone in Europe reading this should not expect a EUR equivalent bundle to show up with their own Windows 11 purchase.

Also this week

Microsoft is also testing a rebuilt Xbox PC app, codenamed Garrison, that fixes one of the handheld PC gaming scene’s longest-running annoyances. Windows Central’s Jez Corden ran a leaked build on an Xbox Ally X and reported the performance and usability gains for navigation are night and day, with the old app’s “rubber banding” cursor lag gone and library loading for over 1,000 games reportedly much faster. No release date yet, but it’s expected to reach Xbox Insiders before a wider roll-out.

Elsewhere, a nine-year-old Xbox 360 modding project finally got finished with help from a cheap microcontroller. A £5 Raspberry Pi Pico let one hobbyist finish the Xbox 360 reset glitch hack he shelved in 2017, dumping the NAND and programming a CoolRunner in minutes. The hack bypasses the console’s CPU verification by sending a precisely timed electrical pulse into its reset pin, something that used to require specialist glitch-chip hardware. The twist: just last week, the PeerPressure Xbox 360 persistent soft-mod was released, a software-only route that makes the whole hardware exploit largely redundant for anyone just wanting to run homebrew.

What this means for you

If a new Windows 11 laptop or desktop is already on your shopping list, time the purchase for the 2 November to 31 December window and buy from a US retailer Microsoft has confirmed as participating, then claim the bundle through the Microsoft Store before 12 February 2027. Don’t buy hardware specifically to chase this: the full 25-game list isn’t public yet, several of the confirmed titles are years old, and nothing here is coming to the EU based on what Microsoft has said so far. Check that whatever PC you’re buying can actually run the games you care about before assuming the bundle adds real value to your purchase.
