Xbox CEO says the reset is working, then the GTA 6 claim unravels

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma held an internal town hall this week to tell staff the company’s year-long restructuring is paying off. The transcript leaked, as these things do, and it’s a genuinely interesting read: admissions of a near-death spiral, plans for a multi-device Xbox successor, and a GTA 6 streaming claim so bold that Microsoft’s own chief strategy officer had to walk it back the same day.

From free fall to growth, according to Sharma

Sharma addressed all of Xbox in an internal town hall, with a transcript shared to Windows Central and verified by trusted sources. The headline admission: in a recent town hall with Microsoft gaming staffers, Sharma described how Xbox was in “free fall” declines before this year’s big restructure. That’s a remarkable thing for a sitting CEO to say out loud to her own staff, even in an internal meeting.

Sharma described the cuts as the most significant restructure in Xbox history, noting that the business previously lost 64 cents for every dollar invested. That’s the scale of the problem she inherited when she took the top job this spring, succeeding Phil Spencer. The fix has involved brutal headcount reductions: 1,600 job cuts were executed by July, with another 1,600 expected later this year. Chief content officer Matt Booty reportedly told staff last month the company is still only three-quarters of the way through that process.

Sharma’s pitch is that the pain is producing results. She told staff the business has started climbing out of that hole at two to three times its previous pace, and pointed to recent releases including Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons 2 and World of Warcraft Forever as having strong starts. Xbox has also reportedly seen a 30% increase in positive brand sentiment over the past year, according to a transcript excerpt circulated by industry watcher Klobrille.

None of that erases the other side of the ledger. Alongside the growth claims, Microsoft is tightening its cloud gaming service: from November, Microsoft is limiting streaming hours to 15 hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, 10 hours for Premium subscribers, and five hours for Game Pass Essential, with a pay-as-you-go option coming the following month. Growth and rationing, arriving in the same quarter.

Metric Figure
Job cuts completed by July 2026 1,600
Additional cuts expected later in 2026 1,600
Prior reported loss per dollar invested 64 cents
Claimed growth rate since reset 2 to 3 times prior pace
Brand sentiment change, year over year +30%
Game Pass Ultimate cloud streaming cap (from November) 15 hours/month
Game Pass Premium cloud streaming cap 10 hours/month
Game Pass Essential cloud streaming cap 5 hours/month

Project Helix: one console won’t be enough

The more interesting part of the town hall, for anyone who actually buys hardware, is what Sharma said about Xbox’s next console generation, internally called Helix. She provided new details about Microsoft’s plans for the next Xbox generation, saying that rather than developing a single successor to the Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft is planning a family of devices aimed at different types of players.

“We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10,” she said. “There is not one device that fits all.” Sharma reportedly added that Xbox will have a strong home console at the center of that lineup, while acknowledging that a growing share of players want to game away from the TV, which reads as a fairly direct nod toward handheld hardware built by Xbox or a partner. There are some things Xbox believes it’s the best in the world to manufacture itself, and other things it will partner on.

That matches the direction Microsoft has already been nudging toward with Xbox-branded handhelds built alongside ASUS, and it lines up with Sharma’s comments that the underlying Windows-based operating system work for handheld-style devices is maturing. Nothing here is a product announcement. It’s a CEO describing a strategy two and a half years or more before the hardware likely ships, so treat the specifics as direction rather than a spec sheet.

The GTA 6 streaming claim, and the same-day walk-back

The most dramatic line from the town hall didn’t even make it a full day without a correction. Sharma reportedly told staff that Microsoft is getting ready to do something around Grand Theft Auto VI that “no other platform holder is doing.” The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that line referred to Xbox securing exclusive cloud streaming rights to GTA 6, meaning Xbox would have snagged the exclusive rights to stream the game via Xbox Cloud Gaming, a service that lets players stream Xbox console games to phones, tablets, laptops, desktops and TVs. Given that Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6, that would have made cloud streaming the only way to play the game on a computer at launch.

It didn’t survive contact with Microsoft’s own communications team. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said the Verge’s report claiming Xbox had exclusive streaming rights to GTA 6 was “misreporting.” Ball’s statement confirmed the game is still launching on Xbox on November 19, but specifically denied the streaming-exclusivity angle and the PC-via-cloud workaround that outlets had built stories around within hours.

Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has commented publicly on any streaming arrangement, exclusive or otherwise. For now the only confirmed fact is the release date; everything about cloud streaming rights for one of the biggest games of the decade is back to being unconfirmed.

Detail What was reported What Xbox said hours later
Streaming exclusivity Xbox Cloud Gaming only, no PS Plus or GeForce Now Denied, called “misreporting”
PC access at launch Possible via cloud streaming, no native port needed Not confirmed; game “will not be streaming exclusively or to PC”
Console release date Not the focus of the leak Confirmed: November 19, 2026 on Xbox
Game Pass streaming hour caps apply? Unclear Still unconfirmed either way

What this means for you

If you’re deciding whether to buy a Series X|S, this town hall is a reason for mild optimism rather than a reason to act. Sharma’s comments confirm Microsoft intends to keep supporting current consoles rather than abandoning them for cloud-only strategies, which was a real fear a year ago. Don’t read anything about a next-gen Xbox handheld as imminent: Helix is a direction, not a product with a date.

On GTA 6, don’t restructure your PC gaming plans around cloud streaming just yet. The one detail that actually held up is the November 19 release date on consoles; everything about a PC workaround through Xbox Cloud Gaming is, as of this week, officially denied. If a native PC version or a confirmed streaming deal materializes later, that’s a different story worth revisiting.

Razer launched its Wolverine V4 lineup for Xbox and PC on October 6. The wireless Wolverine V4 Pro costs €209.99 and the wired Tournament Edition costs €109.99, with the Pro adding capacitive thumbstick sensors, four magnetic back buttons and a removable front plate. The Pro ships with an 8,000Hz polling rate on PC, though Xbox Series X|S consoles are limited to 250Hz regardless of controller. Razer says the Pro’s battery lasts up to 27 hours and fully recharges in three hours. It lands in the same month Microsoft’s own Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition goes up for preorder at €79.99, and amid still-unverified leaks suggesting a proper Xbox Elite Controller Series 3 with Hall-effect and TMR sticks is close to a reveal.

Separately, Sony may be prepping new PlayStation Portal hardware. The Wi-Fi Alliance recently certified two unannounced PlayStation products, and the certification documents indicate they could be updates to the PlayStation Portal, fueling speculation about an OLED model. The certification documents list no screen technology directly, but leaker KeplerL2 had claimed earlier in the year that Sony was working on an OLED panel version of the Portal. Sony hasn’t commented, and nothing in the filings confirms a display upgrade, battery change or new price. Treat it as a rumor with a paper trail, not a product.
